8/29/09

Oh man. It's gonna be a rough morning tomorrow. We had wicked awesome weather in the Upper Midwest today, so my dumb ass went ahead and dragged out the weight bench. Oh man.

The day's driving was about as ideal as it gets. I had a nice two-hour trip up I-69, arriving in Fremont 45 minutes ahead of schedule. My trailer had just finished being loaded, so I guess we could say that I was right on time. Then I made my drop/hook and headed westward. No traffic to slow me down and an afternoon ballgame on the radio... life is good. Of course the game didn't go quite right, but you know how it is. Now we have the Twinkies in second place instead of those thugs from Chicago, so hopefully Texas can hold on here for a few more innings.

I stopped off at the Pilot/Road Ranger in Princeton, Illinois for the night, in honor of the upcoming start to the college football season... or something. I did indeed get the 4am Tuesday ETA for my delivery in Colorado so I'll be able to run a nice steady pace for the next couple of days. Gotta love that. I have a feeling that it's going to hurt to get out of bed in the morning, so being on a flexible schedule is a big plus.

The week wraps up with 2,928 miles plus the stop pay from Kansas, so just a shade under $1,300. If not for the fact that I will be taking a healthy chunk of September and then probably quite a bit of November at home, it would almost seem that I had a chance of running down last year's earnings before all is said and done. Instead of the usual busy winter/spring and slow summer, I've had a terrible winter and then a good spring and summer thus far in '09.

One more week, mofos...

8/28/09

I think that I'm getting to the calendar-watching phase of this latest stint on the road. The frustration seems to set in much more quickly after I've been out long enough and it's time to go home. Today though, I really do think that my ire was justified. After an easy trip across to Plainfield, complete with a pre-plan for the weekend, things were looking quite rosy. Then I got to cross Indy during a rainy rush hour. The dipshit motorists had me shouting creative words that even I have never heard before. And I've heard 'em all, man.

I'm on my way up I-69 to Fremont for tomorrow's pickup, but spending more than two hours going from Plainfield to Daleville was all I could handle. I stopped off at the lovely Pilot and parked for the night. They do have a SubWay though. An Italian BMT with double meat can always take some of the sting out of a fit of road rage.

After I make a drop/hook tomorrow afternoon, I'll be heading westward for a delivery in Colorado. The plan summary says that it's due by 4am Tuesday. This would generally motivate me to make the delivery on Monday evening. It's getting tough to read these guys' dispatching habits lately though. One day I'm getting just enough time to cross Ohio without a minute to spare and another day I'm getting half a day of extra time to make a delivery in Indiana. I won't be shocked if they try some more of that nihilist monkey business. A Monday evening delivery certainly would work best for me. That way I could send in my home time request and have plenty of time to get back to Michigan before my license expires, plus I would make a few bucks along the way. Time will tell, as I'm prone to say.

The nice long weekend run will ensure another healthy paycheck, especially when combined with my extra stop pay from the Kansas affair. Beauty.

(2pm) Trip odometer - 72.1

Yeah, that was a long ass morning. I didn't sleep worth a damn last night either, so that sure didn't help the cause. All told, the $175 in stop pay for this run is more than fair. I just was not enjoying life much for quite a while in the process of actually earning the extra pay. Usually the $35 for an extra stop is just some quick easy cash. Actually working for a living was a definite change of pace.

I was dispatched to deliver in Plainfield by 6pm tomorrow, much to my relief. The original plan summary said 10am. I would have had to run until today's 14 hours were gone and then get cracking again after a ten hour break to make a 10am deadline. 6pm is much better, given the way today has left me feeling. I am one tired mofo.

I scooted about halfway across Missouri this afternoon and decided to call it a night in Columbia. Probably six hours or so left from here, I would guess. The delivery is a drop/hook so I should be able to take off in the morning and get rid of it a little early. One more load for the weekend should leave me in pretty good shape (if I can get one). Probably time to start working my way toward home at the beginning of next week. It would be best to find myself somewhere far away when that time comes.

8/26/09

It wasn't possible that today could start earlier than planned, right? Just not possible. I had a scheduled pickup time of 5am. I set my alarm for 3:45am. No way could the day begin any earlier...

So of course, at 2am, my satellite unit chirped and woke me from my peaceful slumber. "Load canceled. Please send Form 40 and Form 02." Form 40 updates my hours and Form 02 updates my duty status. I did as I was told and went back to bed. My alarm woke me at 3:45am, as scheduled, since I hadn't thought of turning it off while I was up dealing with the satellite message. I called the 800 number to check on my board status. Not on the board. Whatever dude. Back to bed again. I could deal with those people in the morning.

Around 6:15am, I was awakened by another satellite message. "When are you going to board?" Okay then, let's do it. Game on... I replied that I had sent in my forms (as directed) at 2am. The fact that I wasn't on the board was not my call.

"Do you have an empty?" I replied that I dropped my empty yesterday and that we can't park at Con-way yards while hooked to a trailer. I could grab an empty once I received an assignment.

"Can't board without an empty." I replied that the usual approach here would be to board without an empty, since I would have to leave the yard once I was hooked to a trailer. I asked which way I would be going, thinking that maybe this conversation was taking place because they needed me to go somewhere and pick up a load. No, apparently it was taking place simply to keep me from sleeping.

All of these messages were coming from someone whose name is unfamiliar to me. Then I got another saying something about people being on the board and the planner not knowing where I was going or something. Then another message came from someone else whose name I didn't recognize, saying that it was all good and I was on the board. I'm not sure exactly what the complication was. The first individual seemed to be implying that I was supposed to hook to a trailer once my load was canceled. Doing so would have started my 14 hour clock at 2am, thus ending it at 4pm, and not really doing my employer or myself any favors in the process. I would have had to start driving aimlessly, in the middle of the night, with absolutely no knowledge of where I was picking up next, and then tried to find a place to park. I know the drivers are traditionally the non-thinkers in this little game that we play, but come on. A little common sense.

After getting the message from the second individual (indicating that I was on the board), I grabbed my computer and checked on my board position. #2. Not so bad I guess. Probably would have been #1 if the 2am sequence of events had been handled properly, but that's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. I was fully awake by this time, so I was able to catch up on the news that I missed last night. Tigers win. Twinkies win. White Sox lose. Ted Kennedy checks out. Bunch of stuff about deficits and unemployment and inflation and other assorted nonsense that shouldn't be surprising to anyone. And so on, and so forth. In other words, the only thing of personal interest that I really missed while sleeping was a ballgame.

Later in the morning, I received a new load assignment. So I headed across the yard and hooked to an empty, then sent in my load confirmation with the number of my empty trailer. I got my information about stop locations and such, but no dispatch. A few minutes later I received a message asking for the number of my empty trailer. My reply was probably more sarcastic than it had to be, but seriously, enough already. The trailer number is in the load confirmation, presumably for a reason. They got the number one more time from my reply though. Good enough.

I had a drop/hook in the same industrial park as the Con-way yard, so I headed over and checked in. My scheduled arrival was 10am and I showed up around 9:30am. I saw my loaded trailer sitting and waiting for me. The paperwork, on the other hand, was another issue. I didn't get that until 11am. By the time I got everything checked over and made it out through the security gate, it was 11:15am. Okay then, why do all of these times matter?

I am on a weird sort of run with some pretty tight timelines. One drop tomorrow at 4:30am (Central), another at 6am, and a third at 7:30am. Then I re-trace the route and make pickups at each of the first two drops before delivering at the place in Plainfield where the load originated. I guess this would be the true definition of a dedicated turn, if there ever was one. So the big issue is the 4:30am first drop. There is no place to park at the first consignee in Leawood, Kansas. Therefore my last shot at parking was the truck stop in Grain Valley, Missouri. We do have a yard in Kansas City but, as you'll see, I really can't afford to go six or seven miles out of the way and then go six or seven miles to get back on route this time around. I reached Grain Valley at 6:45pm (my time). A post-trip inspection takes us to 7pm. A ten hour break takes us to 5am. I have a little over 30 miles left to cover, so... ~5:30am (4:30 Central) if I'm lucky, right? It's gonna be pretty damn close. If my paperwork had been done on time, no worries. If I could spend the night at the consignee, no worries. As it stands, we'll just have to see. CTL has the new Big Brother satellite tracking going on, so I can't really tweak the schedule much. I'll just take the seven minute rounding error that I'm allowed, hit the road at 4:53am, and then see what happens. At least there shouldn't be much traffic at that hour.

I tried to figure how an 8 hour break tonight (instead of 10) might affect my schedule, but I can't see how it would fit when I have five stops to make tomorrow, each an hour and a half apart. I would never get my two hours of down time to finish the split before today's 14/22 hour clock ran out. (If none of this makes any sense to you, there's a reason for that. Obfuscation of common sense. Your government doing what it does best...)

Pretty decent outcome for the day in terms of miles. Plainfield to Leawood was 482 miles. Then I'll have something like 13 and 16 miles between stops. Then the same miles re-tracing the path back to Leawood. Then another 482 back to Plainfield, plus $175 in extra stop pay. My delivery in Plainfield is scheduled for Friday morning, leaving a shot at a decent weekend and a good week overall. Groovy.

Think I can get to sleep in the early evening again? The odds are against me, but let's give it a shot.

8/25/09

Sometimes you just wish you could have been wrong, it seems. Unfortunately, in the context of predicting today's outcome, I was right. Thus, I'll be getting out of bed at 4am tomorrow. Boo hoo. On my way across Indiana I received a pre-planned assignment. It was, in fact, a Con-way run leaving Plainfield. I'm only going to East St. Louis with it, so I should be on the board early enough for some more work tomorrow. 4am is wicked early though.

Not a whole lot else going on. I was sure to mind my P's and Q's as I passed through Indianapolis a couple of times, given the result of my last trip through town. The enforcement dude was out there today too. He had a big truck pulled over on the westbound side as I made my way from Greenfield to Plainfield after making my drop.

Early night tonight, so we'll wrap up by tossing some red meat to those of you who love to hate my Irish...

8/24/09

Video game systems have gotten pretty advanced these days, from what I can tell. You know what though? None has ever been as good as the original Nintendo as far as I'm concerned. Two buttons and a directional pad. The beauty lies in the simplicity. It's amusing to see that the games for which we once spent $50 can now be played on the internet in the form of a ten second flash download. Imagine my sheer delight then when I found that I could not only play Baseball Stars online, but I could also save my game's progress and build my team from the ground up. The folks at virtualnes.com just may have done more to relieve my boredom out here than anything else that I've found previously. Contra, Blades of Steel, Tecmo Super Bowl, Zelda... dude, they have it all.

After finding that the lounge at the hotel on Osceola was not open last night, I wound up building my team on Baseball Stars into the wee hours of this morning. I only had a quarter mile to drive this morning though, so a few hours of sleep were more than enough. My drop/hook was quick and easy, after which I returned to the truck stop and resumed my juvenile entertainment. I was #11 on the board since I was under the jurisdiction of West Memphis, so I didn't expect to be moving any time soon. After maybe a half hour I received instructions to deadhead to the terminal and get back on the board.

The trip down to West Memphis was uneventful and I was back on the board at #8. After a couple of hours I got my choice of three runs. 200-something miles to Tennessee for tomorrow morning, 200-something miles to Kentucky for tomorrow morning, or 481 miles to Indiana for tomorrow whenever I damn well feel like it. The Tigers had a late game on the coast tonight and the pitching matchup was promising, so I didn't really see any reason to take a morning delivery. Indiana it is then.

A simple 'hook and go' somehow managed to turn into a bit of a to-do. The trailer that I picked up had a padlock on it. I grabbed the paperwork (with the trailer number and load number written on it) and headed inside to see if the dispatcher had a master key for me to use. She gave me the key, I removed the lock, and I was off to the big road. Five minutes later my phone rang. Yeah, I left the paperwork for my load sitting at the dispatch window. Shit. At least I hadn't gotten too far out of town yet. After doubling back and retrieving my bills, I was on my way for realsies.

I got up to Effingham and decided to park for the night, leaving a few hours of driving for tomorrow. Unfortunately the entrance the the Petro in Effingham happens to be an effing mess at the moment, but I made my way in eventually and found a parking spot. I told the dispatcher in West Memphis to put me in Greenfield for 5pm tomorrow, so I guess that means I have to be there by 5pm. I'm sure I'll get going a little earlier, but it's always nice to know that the alarm clock gets a day off. 529 miles to kick off the week ain't bad at all. Of course tomorrow will probably only bring a short deadhead to the Con-way in Plainfield, but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.

Now, if you'll excuse me. I'm going to have to decide between Double Dragon and Castlevania. This decision will require some thought.

(Could the Tigers really blow a 10-1 lead tonight? For goodness' sake I hope not.)

8/23/09

If the White Sox already lost and now the Tigers are on their way to losing, did today actually happen? I was in Texas yesterday and I'm in Arkansas today, so I guess I'll have to acknowledge that today took place after all.

Pretty easy Sunday drive today. I was in the mood to try something new and I had plenty of time to kill, so I followed US-67 to the north out of Little Rock and then cut across on state routes to Osceola. That was actually probably easier than the usual I-30 to I-55 routine. I only remember a few towns along the way. Even with a missed turn that left me on a skinny road for twenty or thirty miles, there were no issues to slow me down.

My delivery is supposed to be a drop/hook around the corner from here tomorrow morning. I guess there's a possibility that I could get rid of it tonight, but I'm not feeling terribly assertive. The hotel across the street appears to have some sort of entertainment potential. I think I'll wait for the end of this ballgame and then send my Swedish buddy Sjoe across the street to see if he can find some trouble.
There have been Visits to this here blog dohickie.
