8/16/08

Seven is a pretty popular number, right? Some people go so far as to say that it's lucky? Well, seven dead-stopped traffic jams on I-95 is a few too many for me. Weekends are supposed to be the easy times. The traffic was a lot lighter than it would be during the week, but people kept crashing into each other. Then, of course, everybody has to stop and stare...

So yeah, pretty annoying trip today. I flipped on my CB to see what they were saying about DC. Nothing good, so I stopped short for the night. We'll see if my luck is any better tomorrow morning.

The workout tonight didn't feel like I had made any progress at all, but after comparing against last week I guess I made a few steps in the right direction. Usually, after a long dormant period, my muscles will respond with big leaps early on and then taper off. This time around, I'm trimming calories at the same time. I think that is the biggest reason that I couldn't kick the reps a little higher tonight.

[Workout A]
Incline Press - 2nd set added 5 pounds & maintained reps, 3rd set also added 5 pounds & lost 3 reps
French Press - 2nd set added 5 pounds & lost 3 reps, 3rd set maintained weight & added 1 rep
Side Laterals - Maintained weight all three sets, added 3 reps to final set
Seated Calf Raise - Added ten pounds & did same 85 reps
Squat - Added 20 pounds to each set & maintained reps

That's what I would call a mixed bag of sorts. Not as bad as I thought while I was sitting out there in the parking lot though. Back on the road in the morning.

Okay, I think I got it squared away. I can neither confirm nor deny this news report. Apparently thousands of people need to know that I am not the requisite 35 years of age until 2011. (Funny stuff anyway. Thanks Jess.)

8/15/08

What's up with the people of Massachusetts today? They're usually a cranky bunch of bastards up there. Not today though. From the guy at McDonald's to the receiver at my customer to the truck driver parked next to me there to... well, everyone really (even the cops directing traffic)... they all seemed to be in a pleasant mood today. I even saw a few skirts that have me reconsidering my long-held lack of attraction to Irish girls.

My trip this morning was quick and easy. The guy at the dock apologized for taking a while on account of being shorthanded. Honestly though, they got me empty more quickly than a lot of places do. Once I pulled around the corner and parked, I cranked up the A/C and crawled into bed. Head hits pillow --> load is assigned. Last night was the second night in a row that I slept well and today was the second day in a row that I was tired. Whatever. I went to leave the same way that I came. Nope. Road closed. The officer directing traffic told me how to get back to the highway and all was well.

On to Clinton for some cereal headed to North Carolina. We've seen this movie before. I was scheduled for 7pm. I had time to get there before 7pm, but not if I took a break first. So I headed straight there. Holy mother of all detours! That first detour in Agawam was a piece of cake. The one in Clinton was Super Trucker material. The officer directing traffic made it sound quick and easy. No. It was not quick and easy. Picture a neighborhood in your local community where the streets are a little tight for someone driving an SUV. Now throw in a few monstrous hills and intersections at weird angles. Just for kicks, add some churches and schools and shit. Yep, that's the one. There's a bridge right before the street on which the shipper is located. That bridge is closed for construction, so I got to cruise through the neighborhood. Given the terrain, we're not talking 'down one more block and turn left.' It was a pretty crazy route. Ce n'est pas bon, as our newest Neville Chamberlain wannabe would say.

I got there. This time my trailer was loaded and ready. This meant that I could head down the road today instead of taking a break at the shipper. Groovy. I asked the shipping guy if there was a better way out of town, on account of how badly that detour sucked balls. He gave me a route through town and out to the west. That worked okay... or did it? Yeah, actually the directions were fine. It was a pretty tight squeeze in some spots but nothing terrible. There was however, as we say from time to time, a twist.

And now, for the latest installment of You Can't Make This Shit Up...

I turned onto the access road for I-190 and checked my mirrors as I tend to do. I caught a glimpse of my trailer number, as I tend to do. I don't normally pay attention to the numbers once I'm rolling, but something made me look again. It didn't exactly look wrong, but something didn't seem right either. Observe here, the trailer that I was pulling.
So I took a peek at my paperwork, just to be sure. Doh! Observe now, the trailer that I am currently pulling. What are the odds, seriously?

Hey, what's wrong with backtracking ten miles and snaking your way through a little town again when you're having fun, right? My first confirmed case of dyslexia, I guess.

So I headed out, again. Back through Clinton, again. When I got down to I-90, it was a parking lot. No big surprise there on a Friday afternoon. The toll booths to I-84 tend to back up all the way to Worcester. At least I got to pass a few million people who were waiting to pay, once I got to the exit. No lines for the EZPass lane. I made it through Hartford and decided that I have no desire to tackle the Bronx today. I started out tired as it is. By the time I got through there, my patience would be just about gone and parking wouldn't be too plentiful, so I've ducked off in Connecticut for the night.

This load delivers at 6am Monday. I'll knock out half tomorrow and the rest on Sunday. I already know that I can park at the consignee so, grumpy security guards notwithstanding, I'm set up pretty well. My first week back to work wraps up at a tidy 3,044 miles plus $35 in stop pay and $59 in northeast pay. Better than a kick in the balls.

8/14/08

Well, 685 miles today. That's a long day. Not a whole lot else to say really. I will say that, if I lived near the New York Thruway, I wouldn't mind having one of those jobs hauling doubles across here every day. That would be a sweet gig. This is a pretty nice ride, except when the snow gets three feet deep and such.

Tonight's workout is a slow count shaping kind of thing. It's more about squeezing the muscles until they burn, so the numbers won't matter a whole lot. I'll go ahead and post it before I step outside. I'm not sure how much I'll feel like typing after I'm done.

8/13/08

I got a beep this morning at 8:30am telling me to go get some tires and take them down to Lafayette. There was another run stacked behind it, so the day started right. At 8:34am, I was sitting in the front seat and wiping the crap out of my eyes when an old Armenian dude came up to my window. He started giving me shit about parking on private property and such. I told him that I was just writing down my directions and that I would be gone in a minute. He started on some rant about people parking overnight and how he needed to get the police involved and all that. Dude, a truck sitting on a lot next to a loading dock designed for trucks isn't going to hurt anyone. I think the Russians might need to skip over Ukraine and Estonia on their path to world domination, just to give that guy something better about which to worry. I'm glad I got my assignment and woke up before he showed up. He might have really been pissed if he knew I spent the night.

Down to Monee for a quick drop/hook. 39 miles... two hours. Guess that 'skipping Chicago rush hour' part didn't quite pan out. There was a truck flipped over on the ramp from I-55 to (I think) I-294 northbound, so everything was backed up on I-55. I saw trucks being forced to back down the serpentine ramp as the police stopped traffic in the right lane. Crazy. Then I got on I-294 southbound and it looked okay for at least a couple of minutes. Ten miles per hour max for the rest of the way until I hit I-57.

The drop/hook part was quick and easy though. Then I retraced my route down to Lafayette with a nice 6,000 pound load. Another quick drop/hook on that end had me headed to Kouts, Indiana for a pickup going to Massachusetts. Dude. There was a detour. That seemed easy enough. I don't know if signs were moved for the construction or if (more likely) I'm just an idiot or what exactly happened. Long story short... I got lost. Not 'out in the woods with no compass' lost. After all, the numbered routes are mainly north/south or east/west in that part of Indiana. I don't know what the hell was going on, but every time I thought I found another way to go, there was damn construction blocking my route. I got there eventually.

Obviously, I wasn't in the greatest of spirits when I got to my shipper. Then I realized where I was. That was the shipper at which an old CFI driver threatened to kick my ass. That memory put an instant smile on my face. Those guys had me loaded quickly like they always do. I thought about heading east on US-30 to save the company a few bucks on tolls and trim a few miles. I have to be in Massachusetts by 9am Friday though, so I'm not dicking around. I headed up to the Indiana Toll Road instead. Straight across I-90 from here the rest of the way.

Today added some pretty good miles to my week. I'll be at 2,172 (plus $35 stop pay and $24 northeast pay) when I get empty on Friday morning. With two days' worth of dispatches left, I should end up making a few bucks.

I was pretty jelly-legged this morning, so the jumprope got the day off. Hamstrings aren't exactly used to getting worked and I hit them pretty good last night. A day to let my pitiful body rest was probably a good idea anyway.

8/12/08

You know how hard it is to actually add twenty seconds of jumping to your time when you're fat and lazy? Really freaking hard. That's how hard. After I got down to Harrodsburg and hit the dock, I whipped out the Cable of Death, as it has come to be known. I'm not entirely sure if I'll be able to add another twenty tomorrow.

Anyhow, quick 250 mile trip up to Lafayette from there. I checked in at 3:30pm for an 8:00pm appointment. They had me loaded and rolling by 7pm, so good enough. Then it was decision time again. I could spend the night in Indiana and get past Chicago during tomorrow morning's rush hour or I could head up to Bolingbrook tonight and just let the parking sort itself out. I played it safe last night (good call, small parking lot at the shipper) so I headed north tonight. The consignee was in an industrial park and I usually have some luck in those instances.

I came up I-65 and across on US-30 to avoid that northern Indiana/Illinois debacle on I-80. That worked out nicely and traffic was light the whole way. I checked in at the consignee and the guy told me that I couldn't get unloaded until 8am. I was dispatched to arrive by 8am, but my assignment said that it was a drop/hook on this end. I asked him if I could drop and hook. He said that I could, but "most CFI guys want to do a live unload." If that's the case, then most guys are pretty dumb. Why in the hell would I want to spend the night in the way of a busy trucking terminal and then wait for them to unload my trailer in the morning? I made my drop/hook tonight. Now they can do whatever they want to do with my trailer in the morning and I don't need to be involved.

I headed down the street and scouted for an empty warehouse. Maybe a quarter mile down I found one. The construction equipment is always a dead giveaway. I am #1 and I should have a ten hour break in the book before they give me anything, so I'm staying on the board tonight.

My private parking facility was a convenient place to drag out the Godforsaken weight bench and bang out another round of misery. I never get mosquito bites on my ass in the gym at home, but otherwise the workouts out here stack up okay.

One-arm Row - 3 sets (12,10,8 reps)
Curl - 3 sets (12,10,3 reps)
Stiff-leg Deadlift - 3 sets (12,10,6)
Front Lateral - 3 sets (12,10,8)
Hammer Curl - 3 sets (12,10,5)

The weird thing here is that, whenever I get the courage to look in the mirror, my triceps still have decent definition and bulk. My biceps look flabby and weak. When it came to moving iron this week though, the biceps have maintained a lot more of their strength. My triceps were screaming as soon as I started the other day. Weird. This is the second full workout this week and the second time that I'm not parked near a shower. Bum deal there. The good old baby wipes/bottled water/shower gel routine had to suffice again. I can get by with relatively little water so it's not like I blow a lot of money this way, but that shit is cold.

At press time tonight, we're sitting at 1,069 miles with an empty trailer and full hours for tomorrow. I also have my $35 for the extra stop so the week is taking shape pretty well so far. Let's hope it keeps up.

8/11/08

Damn those Russkies. How am I supposed to get one of those mail order brides when they're trying to provoke another World War? The KGB would never let me visit in those circumstances.

Well, on balance a decent day I guess. I woke up and kicked the tires. Then the damn jumprope made its reappearance. You know how long you can jump quickly when you're fat and lazy? One minute. No kidding. Guess we'll try to add twenty seconds a day for a while and see what's what. I tried slowing down the pace once I got winded but I kept stepping on the rope.

I rolled down through Indiana and into Ohio this morning. Since I couldn't arrive more than an hour early, I stopped at a truck stop north of Cincinnati and hung out for a while. When it was time to roll again, I promptly made a wrong turn and went north on I-75. That part is just me being the typical dummy that I am. I didn't realize it for about ten miles though. That part is me being a full-on retard. Good thing I was shooting for that hour early.

So I got down there and checked in. They gave me a dock, I backed in, and they took my keys. The rules were that the truck had to be shut off with the keys in the dockworker's possession or the truck had to be disconnected from the trailer. Screw it. It was a beautiful evening. Why bother dropping the trailer? Of course, the other five trucks at the docks were all disconnected and idling. Whatever man. I don't buy the fuel.

Those guys took their sweet ass time getting me unloaded but I had already received a pre-plan earlier in the day so it didn't bother me much. They were also extremely polite, which I find refreshing. The pre-plan gave me a direction to head whenever I left the customer. I would have to find somewhere to park for the night and, whichever way I went, it was going to be quite a way from my customer. I know that I'm picking up in Kentucky tomorrow, so this time I actually managed to head south on the first try. I know. I'm a professional. What can I say?

Getting empty so late into the evening, I knew that parking would be at a premium. I had enough hours on my 14 to get all the way to the next shipper but their parking policy isn't included in my directions. Sometimes I roll the dice and see what happens. This time though, I pulled in at the Kentucky welcome center. This place is pretty big and there are usually enough people coming and going to leave a few empty spaces. Tonight was no exception.

I pick up at 10am tomorrow in Harrodsburg and then head back north. Given the extremely pleasant pre-autumnal temperatures in the upper midwest over the last few days, I'm glad I'm not going south. There's a second pickup in Indiana tomorrow afternoon and then a drop the following morning outside Chicago.

Okay man, if this video doesn't make you smile, then you just plain suck. Regardless of your particular political leanings, this dude knocked one out of the park. That must have taken some serious time...

8/10/08

Well, this is a little better. I rolled out of bed around 9am and called the terminal to get myself back on the board. They said that I was #12, so I was braced for yet another wasted day. It only took a few hours for me to get to #0 though. That wasn't bad. When I called in, I was told that I had to pick up in Muskegon by midnight and head down to Cincinnati. I was picking up at a paper place right down on Lake Michigan and I was there once before, so I was pretty confident that I could head over this afternoon for my drop/hook.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda, I guess. When I got there the lady said that they would have had my trailer loaded, but they didn't have any empties. So I had to do a live load. No biggie, I guess. I had to wait in the break room while they loaded my trailer. This allowed me to learn that I can access the world wide interweb even when my Sprint connection thingie says zero percent signal. I had to refresh a few pages that timed out, but you know, zero percent. That ain't so shabby.

I was loaded and rolling before long. My instructions say quite emphatically that I am not to arrive at the consignee in Cincinnati more than an hour early for my appointment. I was given a 7pm appointment tomorrow by the folks at CTL. My paperwork says quite clearly that these loads deliver between 7:30am and 3:30pm, and that we need to have an appointment. So I sent a message asking if the 7pm thing was right. They said that I am to stick with the 7pm, so here's hoping someone will be there to unload my trailer.

I rolled down to a rest area outside Battle Creek and decided to call it a night. Then I got back to basics for a change. Making its return appearance in front of my passenger seat is the trusty weight bench. I got everything set up, completed my workout, walked around the truck a few times to get my heart rate slowed down, and put everything away in exactly forty minutes. The upshot here is that time is really no excuse. Therefore you're all empowered to bust my balls if you don't see at least three workout reports per week on this blog. I intend to get to my baseball playing condition by December 31. Sort of an 'old year's resolution,' I suppose.

I'm not going to post the baseline numbers as far as weights since, quite frankly, they're embarrassing. I've been lazy for too long and I've torn a few muscles in my day, so we're starting off easy. I'll update the progress in terms of increases in final set productivity whenever I get back around to this particular workout. Those last sets end when the muscles fail, so they're the only real indicator of anything as far as I'm concerned.

Getting the week off to a positive start is definitely a good thing. I'm at 566 miles and I'll have time on my log book to pull something out of Ohio tomorrow, although my experience points to a ConWay load leaving Tuesday at the buttcrack of dawn. I guess we'll see.
